HDSLR Montage Assignment

HDSLR Video Montage. Each student will produce a video montage with instrumental music
background of 2 to 3 minutes in length. The montage should be based on a visual theme that works well
with the music. Ambient sound may be used as appropriate. The montage should consist of numerous
camera angles and perspectives. Once edited, export project to DVD-video (widescreen).

Steps to completing the assignment:

1.  Once you have your idea of the subject of your montage, write down the types of shots you will need for your video montage.  These shots should be a variety of medium and close-shots of subject matter that works together as a theme or essay. Avoid overuse of the wide shot. Make this a photographic essay - very artistically-oriented.

2. Only DSLR cameras may be used for this. Shoot in video mode, 24 or 30 progressive frames per second. No timelapses for this project.

3. Try some conservative camera moves, but don't move the camera on every shot. Watch the style of shooting on www.philipbloom.net for ideas on camera angles.

4. Audio can be recorded during the shoot and use as appropriate. Don't let the ambient sound distract from the video.

5. Use appropriate music to go with your montage. No lyrics. Copyright is not an issue as this is just a class assignment. Don't make this a music video though.

6. Make sure the theme/topic of the montage is diverse enough for multiple camera angles and shots. Picking something too narrow can make it difficult for you.

7. Avoid using any auto settings. If you use your own camera, make sure you have manual control of exposure settings.

8. On the day due, turn in your disc with the video file. Export timeline as Vimeo HD or H.264, 1280 x 720 progressive, 5 to 6 mbit datarate. Put this file on your disc for playback in class.

  9.  This assignment will be evaluated using the following criteria:

                a. Shots are properly exposed and have good color rendition.

                b. Shots are composed properly and are not shaky. (good photography)

                c. Ambient sound and music were mised appropriately.

                d. Shots are arranged in an order that supports a theme or message.

                e. No technical glitches are apparent.
                f. The project was completed according to instructions.
