Steps to Editing a News Package

What you need to begin:
a. Your tape recording with b-roll, soundbites, and standup.
b. A written script of what you will say for narration.
c. A DVD-R disc for final output.
d. About four to six hours of time for editing. (not all at once, necessarily)
e. A printout of this document.

In the edit suite:

1. Reserve time in an editing suite for capturing, editing, and outputting your video.

2. Open Adobe Premiere Pro. Create a new project using NTSC - DV standard 48 kHz. At the bottom of the startup screen, browse to a VideoData drive, and make a new folder with your name. Name the project using your name also.

3. When editing interface is loaded, press the F5 key for capture. Once the capture window is displayed, check the settings tab at top right and makek sure the folders for audio and video are set to "Same as Project."

4. Put your tape in the DV VCR, use the controls on the capture window to control the VCR. Cue your tape to the beginning of your footage. Click the red record button. It will begin to play and record your footage.

5. When you have come to the end of your footage, press ESC key once. When the file name window pops up, give a name to the video file, then hit okay. Your footage will now be a clip in the project window of the editing interface. Remember to save your project often - use Ctrl+S.

6. You can now record your narration using the microphone in the editing suite. Make sure you have the mic volume up on the mixer. Click Window, Audio Mixer, Sequence 01 from the menu. Change Audio track 1 from "Read" to Write. Click the microphone symbol above the track. At the bottom of the window, press record and play. Begin speaking into the mic and the recording will be made on track 1. Read all of your narration, pausing a moment where soundbites will be placed.

7. To cut apart your audio track, use the Ctrl+K keys to splice the clip. You can move them down to make room for soundbites.

8. To place soundbites, double-click your video footage in the project window. It loads into the source monitor. Move the playback head to the beginning of the soundbite, then click { under the source window screen. This places an in point there. Move the playback head to the end of the soundbite (usually 8 to 10 seconds later) and click } to make the end point. You can now drag the selected portion down to the place on the timeline you want the soundbite to play. Do this for each soundbite.

9. To place b-roll over narration, use the { and } markers to select shots (usually 3 to 5 seconds long) and drag them down to video 1. If the audio wants to place itself on audio 1, select a different audio track clicking on its header. The audio will now move to the selected audio track. Lower the yellow line on the clip to lower its volume so the narration is louder.

10. To place the standup, follow the same procedure as the soundbites, but place at end of timeline. When finished with all clip placements, you should have continuous sound with continuous video. Save your project. It is now ready for outputting to DVD.

11. With the timeline finished, go to File, Export, Export to Encore. The window will open. Choose to Direct burn without menus. Click Okay. Notice where it want to put your file (should be in your folder) - then give it a name. Make sure your DVD-R disc is in the drive at this time - then click Save. In a few minutes it will begin burning your DVD. When complete, try your DVD in a DVD player.
